Redistricting proposals on the Internet

Maura Farrelly, Georgia Public Radio. July 16, 2001.

Georgia's lawmakers will be convening in slightly more than two weeks...to redraw the state's legislative districts.

Those districts are redrawn every ten years...to reflect the latest census figures...and for the first time ever...Georgians' will be able to look at the proposed redistricting maps on-line.

Maura Farrelly reports.

The digital maps are interactive...allowing viewers to focus on spcific areas...and to pull up demographic reports about those areas. Lt. Governor Mark Taylor says he's very excited about the access that the Internet now gives the public to the redistricting proposals. In earlier redistricting sessions...lawmakers themselves were sometimes hard-pressed to get quick access to printed versions of the various maps...and the idea that the public might actually get a chance to look at the maps as they were proposed...was practically unheard of.

The site is being managed by the University of Georgia...and it can be reached by directing your browser to www.georgia2000.org.

So far...the House Reapportionment Committee has unveiled two possible maps. The Senate committee hasn't present any yet...and with less than three weeks to go before the General Assembly convenes, committee chair Tim Golden has appointed a subcommittee to come up with a solid proposal.
